Recently, Ride Snowboards released the latest of their limited edition artist series DH2's, the DH2.5.

We have to admit, we didn't recognize the artist at first, but loved the board graphic and after reading over the artists bio, definitely recognized where his work had been seen. So when it came time to display the boards, we naturally asked "Hey guys, any of you heard of an artist called Coop?"

Dillon: "ummm, yeah, I love Coop's work!"
Board displayer: "You heard of him?"
Dillon: "Yea I've heard of him." (At which time he turns around, bends over and tugs at his pants which is never really a good sign)

Turns out, Dillon not only has heard of Coop's work, but liked it so much that he got a tattoo of one of his works a while ago. Is Ride copying Dillon's style with the DH2.5? Probably not, but a cool coincidence nonetheless!

When did you get the tattoo?
Dillon: About 5 years ago. Starting following Coop's work a few years before that.

Why did you get it?
Dillon: So the devil can watch my back!

And what about the recent Guardian angel of snowboarding?

Dillon: Just need him to look after me on the snow...like get me out of the woods when I go in too deep.

Iron Chef Champions!!

Surf the Earth employee's Dillon Dudley and Steven Kelly competed and won the 3rd annual Killington Iron Chef competition held at Sushi Yoshi. They dressed in their freshest pirate attire, and with help of their secret ingredients, (AWESOME and EXTRA AWESOME) lead their team into to victory. They created a Vermont masterpiece which they called "THE BEAST" which was the Seven peaks of Killington represented by local moose filet wrapped around roasted garlic mashed potatoes. Gameballs with native Vermont moose, venison, and bear accompanied the mountains all topped with a wasabi-soy cream sauce and finished with rosemary for a touch of foliage. Julienne zuchini, summer squash, carrots and snowpeas provided the fiber.

Rails 2 Riches update

The fifth annual Rails 2 Riches took place in Killington Vermont on December 12, 2009. It was utterly cold night that made your toes ache from just watching. Epic rail dancing moves were thrown down that evening. Even Killington local Lucas Magoon competed.

Some rider's got tired after a long day of competition and took some nasty spills.

Some riders went big like Danny Toumarkine who took home third place for the guys.

Laura Rogoki took home first place prize $1000 cash. She was representing hard for the ladies in the snowboard world.

Shaun Murphy got second place. Well deserved by an East Coast local.

Forrest Bailey became a two time Rails to Riches winner that night. Effortlessly stomping down tricks.

Budweiser visits Killington

Budweiser is a a common name around these parts, but Killington was lucky to be a stop for the East Coast Hitch of the Budweiser Clydesdale's this December. By chance we caught them at the Wobbly Barn before they started back down Killington Road to the Pickle Barrel where they are spending their time here. We actually caught the caravan of semi's heading up on I-89 last Tuesday (sorry, no pictures) as we were heading over to Manchester NH for some line showings. A pretty cool tradition and very cool to see them up close, and to learn about them, check out this link.

RAILS 2 RICHES 2009

Rails 2 Riches has been moved due to unfavorable weather and snow conditions to Saturday, December 12. There is still time to get pumped and get up here next weekend.
The $15,000 Rails 2 Riches Rail Jam for skiers and snowboarders returns for the fifth year. The competition is held under the lights with a blazing bonfire. Come watch as these elite skiers and riders battle it out for a piece of the cash. Don’t miss the after-party!

K2, Lib and Capita reduce their environmental impact!

This post gives a brief overview of the new K2 Eco Pop and the Capita Green Machine and their efforts to minimize snowboard construction environmental impact.

Here is the post: "For the 2010 season, K2 incorporated a "Eco Conscious Construction", which they report saves on steel and base material, as well as a 65-percent improvement on sidewall material waste over the standard ABS versions, into five board series, including the Gyrator and women's Eco Pop (shown here). Ever the indy brand, Capita is releasing the "Green Machine." The design and aesthetic of this true-twin freestyle-oriented deck, emblazoned with a gnarly beast and recycling pentagram graphic, plays to the under-30 set, while on the inside you've got a reforestation certified wood core, a toxin-reducing EVO fiberglass layup, and outside there's a 95-percent recycled base, 100-percent recycled sidewalls, and a bean-derivative topsheet."

Lib Tech is also another company working hard to reduce their impact during snowboard construction. This post states "The goal of making a "green" snowboard is to reduce unsustainable and environmentally harmful materials used. No one's entirely licked it yet, but Mervin Manufacturing is coming the closest. Almost all their Lib Tech and Gnu boards feature recycled bases, soy-based elastomer sidewalls, low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound, b-a-d) epoxy resins, sustainably harvested wood cores, and no toxic finishing clearcoats. Their new Banana Magic model takes it further, incorporating 100 percent Baslat fiber instead of fiberglass, and a topsheet made from castor beans."

Bamboo- Good for the environment and for snowboards!

Check out this interesting posting about Bamboo being used in snowboards. Arbor and Salomon are both companies with focused initiatives on reducing the environmental impact from producing snowboards.

The article does a good job of briefly explaining the bamboo tech in these snowboards: "Arbor has been in the business of building decks using renewable natural materials since 1995, and their 14-board 2010 lineup integrates bamboo along with paulownia, another fast-growing wood, and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified cores. Salomon has garnered attention for their Green Initiative For Tomorrow (GIFT) construction, which uses bamboo to reduce the amount of resin required in construction, and increase pop at the same time. This season GIFT construction is being used in six decks, including the new Grip, pictured here on the right. Arbor Wasteland on the left."

Killington to open for Veteran's Day!

Just got word that Killington will open at 9am for Veteran's day! From Killington:

"Killington will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday with four trails, served by the K-1 Express Gondola and the Northridge Triple Chair. Our mountain ops team is working hard to provide top-to-bottom access, however, some walking may be required on the lower portion of the mountain. So, we ask that you enjoy the Northridge area and only return to the base when necessary.

We will be open on Wednesday this week and will make a decision concerning operations for the upcoming weekend on Thursday morning. By preserving our snow product and not offering access on Thursday and Friday, our goal is to resume snowmaking production, and conditions permitting, resume operations on Saturday.

Lift tickets will be $49 for adults Wednesday and all Killington season passes will be honored."

Beast of the East

Killington opens for the first weekend in November.

The conditions were warm, sunny, and slushy.

Killington will now be known as The Beast!! Can you shred the Beast of the East?

The box was going all day. Giving people an opportunity to make their first turns of the season. As a shop employees we can not ride on Saturdays this season Booo! So with my day off I stopped by the Back to Shred rail jam. Check out some sweet moments of from the day.
